Hosting friends and family at home is one of life’s great joys, but can we take a moment to talk about the cleaning? It’s the not-so-glamorous reality behind every successful party, and if we’re being honest, it’s kind of the worst part. But fear not! Over the years, I’ve uncovered a few cleaning shortcuts that make entertaining life infinitely easier. And the best part? They actually work and will save you time.
Here are five cleaning hacks to help you breeze through prep and post-party cleanup like a total pro.
1. Focus on the Spaces That Matter
Seriously, you don’t need to deep-clean your entire house before your guests arrive. Focus your energy where people will actually spend time, like the dining room, living room, bathrooms, and kitchen. Bonus points if you can close doors to hide messy bedrooms or laundry rooms (no shame in that game!). I like to do a quick surface clean – a quick vacuum, a dusting of visible areas, and wiping down counters – just enough to make things look fresh without stressing over perfection. I also like to have clean dish and hand towels readily available and soap in dispensers. Small details that makes a big difference.
Shortcut tip: Invest in scented candles or a wax warmer for your main hosting areas. Guests will walk into your house and immediately be greeted by a warm, welcoming scent making it feel clean and cozy.
2. Outsource the Dirty Dishes
After the food and drinks start flowing, the dirty dishes inevitably pile up. But here’s my secret… I barely lift a finger. Load the dishwasher as you go throughout the party to avoid the dreaded mountain of dishes later. No dishwasher? Fill your sink or a plastic tub with soapy water, and drop in dirty utensils and dishes throughout the night. By the time the party’s over, the initial grime is gone, and cleanup is so much easier.
Shortcut tip: For larger groups, disposable plates, cups, and utensils can make cleanup so much easier. If you’re like me and the idea of using disposables makes you cringe, don’t worry! There are plenty of eco-friendly options made from bamboo or recycled materials, so you can enjoy a guilt-free cleanup.
3. Create a “Guest-Approved” Bathroom Basket
Nothing’s worse than being halfway through the party and realizing the bathroom is out of toilet paper or having a guest realize it (yikes, right?). First and foremost, ensure your toilet paper is always well-stocked and easily accessible. For an added touch of thoughtfulness, consider assembling a “guest essentials” basket for the bathroom. Include items like additional hand soap, lotion, tissues, air freshener, and even a small container of dental floss. Not only will this make your guests feel cared for, but it will also save you from the hassle of mid-party restocking emergencies.
Shortcut tip: Replace terry cloth towels with disposable guest hand towels for a simple yet elegant solution. Linen-like napkins not only add a decorative touch but also help keep your bathroom clean and tidy with minimal effort.
4. Manage Trash Like a Pro
Trash chaos happens fast during a party, but it doesn’t have to ruin your vibe. A simple tweak? Set up multiple trash and recycling stations around your party space. This not only prevents trash from piling up everywhere but also helps guests help themselves.
Shortcut tip: Before guests arrive, line your trash cans with two or three extra trash bags. When a bag gets full, quickly pull it out, and the next one is already in place – no fumbling for bags mid-party. Genius, right?
5. “Fake Clean” the Day After
Once the party is over, the last thing anyone wants is to spend hours scrubbing and tidying. This is where my go-to “fake clean” strategy comes in. Start with the big, obvious messes like emptying leftover wine glasses, clearing the table, and tossing out party trash. Then, prioritize areas you’ll be using the next day (like getting the kitchen back in shape). The rest? It can wait until you’ve had your coffee and recovered.
Shortcut tip: Check stains and spills first thing (preferably before they set in). Sprinkle baking soda on carpet messes to absorb liquids, then vacuum it up. For counters or tabletops, a quick swipe with a microfiber cloth and all-purpose cleaner works wonders. For more cleanup tips check out my blog on Home Cleaning Remedies.
Hosting Without the Stress
Entertaining doesn’t have to mean breaking your back to tidy every last inch of your home. With these shortcuts, you can spend more time enjoying the party and less time worrying about cleanup. Remember, your guests are there for you, not the state of your baseboards!
