Easter Traditions: The Golden Egg

Growing up, Easter at the Janis’ house wasn’t just a family gathering — it was an experience. The second you walked in, you knew this wasn’t an ordinary Sunday.

And then there was Muffy’s table.

It was the centerpiece of it all – a full masterpiece of porcelain rabbits, perfectly arranged flowers, pastel everything, and details so thoughtful they felt professionally styled. Muffy made Martha Stewart look like a novice. Every year it somehow got more beautiful, more elaborate, more magical.

But as stunning as the table was, we all knew what we were really waiting for: the Easter Egg Hunt.

And this wasn’t just for the kids. Everyone played – no one sat it out. The moment it started, the competition was real. As the youngest, I loved seeing the adults get just as excited (and competitive) as I did.

What I didn’t realize back then was that the entire hunt revolved around one legendary prize.

And trust me… it was everything.

No one was too old or too cool to participate. The moment the hunt began, it was game on. As the youngest, I excitedly scurried around collecting as many colorful eggs as I could find, completely focused on quantity over strategy.

Meanwhile, the older kids and adults had a different mission.

They were searching for the egg – the one that held the ultimate prize: a crisp $100 bill tucked inside the legendary Golden Egg.

Suddenly, it all made sense. The intensity. The competitive spirit. The dramatic dives behind bushes. It wasn’t just about candy – it was about glory. That brilliant little twist brought everyone together in the best kind of friendly competition. And to this day, the stories of who found the Golden Egg (and who almost did) still live on.

Looking back, it wasn’t just about the money. It was about the anticipation. The shared laughter. The way it leveled the playing field so everyone had a reason to run, search, and be present.

As we approach this Easter season, I encourage you to think beyond the ordinary egg hunt. Add something unexpected. It doesn’t have to be monetary, maybe it’s a special privilege, a trophy, a silly crown, or a surprise experience. Find a way to make it unique and unforgettable for all ages.

Because sometimes, all it takes is one “Golden Egg” to turn a simple tradition into a memory that lasts a lifetime.
