Take to the Skies: Rediscover the Simple Joy of Building and Flying a Kite

You know that feeling when the wind tugs at your sleeves and the sun sets the sky ablaze with color? Yes, it’s the perfect call to step outside and enjoy the outdoors.

There’s something delightfully timeless about kites. They’re proof that entertainment can be found in the simple things. It’s just you, a breeze, and a little patience (yes, we can all work on that little virtue) to watch your creation take flight.

A Memory That Flies with Me

Kite flying always stirs up a memory close to my heart. I remember family picnics on the cliffs of Palos Verdes. My dad and I would stand shoulder to shoulder with the blue ocean stretching endlessly before us. He’d hold the spool while I balanced a simple blue kite with a long, fluttering tail, ensuring it was just right to catch the wind.

“Okay, RUN!” he’d call with all the energy of an aerobics instructor. My little legs would sprint across the grass, the kite trailing behind until whoosh it lifted off and danced against the wide expanse of sky.

It wasn’t just a kite that soared that day, it felt like I, too, was floating, carried higher and higher by the gusts of joy. It was a feeling of accomplishment and a cherished memory that I carry with me through life.

My Case for Reviving Kite Flying

Fast forward a couple decades, and somehow we’ve transitioned to screens, gadgets, and endless to-do lists. But if you’re yearning for something that feels real, tactile, and wonderfully simple, kite flying can bring back those carefree moments.

Here’s why building and flying a kite deserves a spot in your outdoor plans:

  • It’s Family Fun That Won’t Break the Bank: A kite won’t cost you more than a couple of lattes. Building one at home? Even cheaper and a great creative challenge to share with kids.
  • It Gets You Outside: Perfect excuse to soak in some Vitamin D and stretch muscles you forgot you had.
  • It’s Nostalgic: Whether you did it as a kid or you’ve only seen it in movies, the sight of a kite soaring high will instantly put a smile on your face.
  • It Teaches Patience and Partnership: Perfect for involving the smallest (or oldest) member of the family. Remember, the kite doesn’t always catch wind on the first try and that’s okay. Try and try again.

Build Your Own Kite

If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, why not create your own kite? Think popsicle sticks, a garbage bag (or old gift wrap), some glue, and string. That’s all it takes to make something far more entertaining than any TikTok video.

Decorate it with bright markers, glitter, or your favorite patterns. Want a long tail that trails? Tie ribbons, tinsel, or even strips of old fabric to the bottom. It’s a project the whole family can get into.

Too much too soon? Log into your Amazon account and you have endless options of kites to choose from. I particularly like the octopus and it is now in my cart.

Flying High

Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, pack a picnic and head to a park, beach, or any open space with plenty of wind. Embrace the fun of trial and error as you discover the perfect balance – how fast you need to run or when to tug the string to catch just the right breeze.

The moment your kite finally catches the breeze and takes flight? Pure magic. You’ll end up with grass-stained knees, windblown hair, and an accomplishment that feels fresh and just a little bit childlike.

You don’t need anything extravagant to create meaningful memories. Sometimes, all it takes is a spring afternoon, some string, and a kite. This nostalgic activity is more than just a pastime; it’s a chance to slow down, reconnect, and revel in life’s simple pleasures.

And hey, if you happen to be up on a cliff in Palos Verdes, you might just catch sight of a blue kite with a long tail, carrying childhood laughter on the wind.

Now, tell me… when’s the last time you flew a kite?
