Hot Toddy
Even though I’m not usually a bourbon or whiskey drinker, this classic hot drink delivers soothing warmth and rich flavor in every sip, making it ideal for cold nights, seasonal entertaining, or when you need a cozy pick-me-up. Simple to make yet deeply satisfying, the Hot Toddy transforms just a few quality ingredients into the ultimate cold-weather comfort cocktail that has warmed hearts for generations.
Ingredients
- 4 cups apple cider use a local, unfiltered one if you can
- 1 cup bourbon a smooth, wheated bourbon like Maker’s Mark works well
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 4 whole cloves
- 1 star anise
- 1 orange sliced into rounds
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the apple cider, maple syrup, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Do not let it boil.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the spices infuse for at least 20 minutes. The longer it simmers, the more intense the spice flavor will be.
- Just before you’re ready to serve, remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Stir in the bourbon and the orange slices.
- Using a ladle, carefully transfer the hot cocktail into glass or insulated mugs.
- You can garnish with a fresh orange slice or a cinnamon stick if you’re feeling fancy.
