Spiced Mulled Wine

Mulled wine has a rich history, with variations being enjoyed since the 2nd century as a way to preserve and enjoy leftover wine. It is customarily garnished with aromatic spices or a citrus slice, enhancing its inviting aroma and rich flavor profile, but its adaptability with different spices and fruits makes it a versatile drink that can be tailored to personal tastes and preferences.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1 orange sliced
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar or honey adjust to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 cup of cranberries or a few slices of fresh ginger for additional flavor

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  • In a large saucepan, combine the wine, brandy, and orange slices.
  • Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and sugar or honey to the mixture.

Step 2: Heat the Mulled Wine

  • Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just barely reaches a simmer. Do not allow it to boil, as this will cook off the alcohol.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the wine gently simmer for at least 15 minutes, up to an hour, to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 3: Serve

  • Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices and orange slices.
  • Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding more sugar or honey to your preference.
  • Serve warm in mugs or heatproof glasses, optionally garnished with a slice of orange or a cinnamon stick for a festive touch.

Notes

Variations

  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the wine with grape juice.
  • If you prefer a stronger punch, add more brandy or substitute another spirit like rum or bourbon.
