Spiced Mulled Wine
Mulled wine has a rich history, with variations being enjoyed since the 2nd century as a way to preserve and enjoy leftover wine. It is customarily garnished with aromatic spices or a citrus slice, enhancing its inviting aroma and rich flavor profile, but its adaptability with different spices and fruits makes it a versatile drink that can be tailored to personal tastes and preferences.
1 bottle of red wine Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon 1/4 cup brandy 1 orange sliced 2-3 cinnamon sticks 4 whole cloves 2 star anise 1/4 cup brown sugar or honey adjust to taste Optional: 1/4 cup of cranberries or a few slices of fresh ginger for additional flavor
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients In a large saucepan, combine the wine, brandy, and orange slices.
Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and sugar or honey to the mixture.
Step 2: Heat the Mulled Wine Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just barely reaches a simmer. Do not allow it to boil, as this will cook off the alcohol.
Reduce the heat to low and let the wine gently simmer for at least 15 minutes, up to an hour, to allow the flavors to meld.
Step 3: Serve Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices and orange slices.
Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding more sugar or honey to your preference.
Serve warm in mugs or heatproof glasses, optionally garnished with a slice of orange or a cinnamon stick for a festive touch.
Variations
For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the wine with grape juice.
If you prefer a stronger punch, add more brandy or substitute another spirit like rum or bourbon.
